Holder and Beam Limiters for X-Ray Diffractometric Study of Rod Cross Sections

Abstract

For x-ray diffraction studies of metallurgical rod specimens and their cross sections two types of equipment are in common usage, glancing angle cameras (<i>1</i>) and diffractometers. The use of a diffractometer is generally seriously hampered in this work by the size of the specimen that can be accommodated. Philips diffractometer, for example, normally handles specimens approximately 10 mm × 20 mm, about one mm thick. This is fine for powder specimens but not entirely satisfactory for metal rods. This report outlines the use of a special holder and beam limiters built for a horizontal diffractometer made by Siemens & Halske of Germany. Siemens diffractometer normally handles thin specimens 38 mm × 38 mm (<i>2</i>). The holder described herein accommodates rods up to 1 ½ in. Long with cross sections down to 1/8 in. The diffracted energy is still very high-up to 70,000 cps from an irradiated area of less than ¼ in. diam.
