Abstract

Light and fluffy samples are encountered in mineralogy, as diatomaceous earth, for instance, as various biological ashes and as chemical precipitates that have been ignited in contact with filter paper. Such samples present a problem in loading into the cup of the usual graphite electrode. If large electrodes are used to contain the necessary quantity, then a great deal of carbon must be consumed during the exposure, adding to the spectral background and strengthening any impurity lines derived from the electrode itself.
