Abstract

The two silicon lines 2881.58 and 2516.12 Å commonly used for steel analysis are measured in the presence of known quantities of interfering elements—chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum. The 2881.58-Å silicon measurements at 5.25-Å/mm dispersion are subject to error when chromium exceeds 0.6%, but at 2.6-Å/mm dispersion chromium does not interfere in amounts as high as 2.4%. The 2516.12-Å silicon measurements at 5.2-Å/mm dispersion are subject to error when vanadium exceeds 0.1%, and at 2.6-Å/mm dispersion, essentially the same errors exists. The 2516.12-Å silicon measurements at 5.2-Å/mm dispersion are also subject to error when molybdenum exceeds 0.2%, but at 2.6-Å/mm dispersion the molybdenum does not interfere in amounts as high as 0.9%.
