Abstract

At one time, the author had received some optically polished materials that showed absorption bands of an unknown origin. These bands could have been due either to impurities within the material itself or due to impurities left in the surface from the grinding and polishing process. In order to determine the source of the impurities, the author obtained samples of various grinding and polishing compounds, mixed each one of them with Nujol to form a mull, and then ran their spectra on a double-beam infrared spectrophotometer.
