Measurement of the Apparent Bandwidth Parameters of an Absorption Band

Abstract

It is quite well known that an absorption spectrum, either recorded or point-point measured, is usually represented graphically as a percentage transmission or absorption vs wavenumber or wavelength. For such an absorption band, the baseline is carefully selected. Usually, it is tangential to the band wings and the different values of <i>T</i><sub>0</sub> and <i>T</i> (where <i>T</i><sub>0</sub> and <i>T</i> are the apparent incident and transmitted intensities corrected for background at different wavenumbers or wavelengths) are thus measured from it. Hence, all absorbance-wavenumber or wavelength-derived bands can be illustrated graphically, from which the different apparent bandwidth parameters Δ<i>v</i><sub>½</sub><sup>a</sup>, Δ<i>v</i><sup>a</sup><sub>¾</sub>, and Δ<i>v</i><sub>¼</sub><sup>a</sup> measured at ½, ¾, and ¼ the maximum absorption can be directly estimated.
