Abstract
Infrared spectra of the pyrolysis products of fifteen different synthetic fibers were examined and compared to the internal reflection spectra of the fibers. Valuable information was obtained, from both the vapor and condensed phases of the pyrolysis products, to qualitatively classify or identify the fibers. The spectra obtained also yielded information as to the characteristics of the thermal degradation of these polymers.
