Abstract

The Ilford Q-emulsions are by far the most widely used for ion detection today. The characteristics of the emulsions used in mass spectrography, have been studied with varying results. Ilford Q1 has been investigated by Brix and Dehmelt and by Burlefinger and Ewald and Ilford Q1 and Q3 by Lichtblau. Ilford Q2 has been investigated by Owens and Ilford Q1, Q2, and Q3 by Khairi and Hintenberger. These studies showed that the photographic response of the emulsions investigated is a function of both the mass and energy of the impinging ions and that dependence varies in kind and degree from one emulsion type to another.
