Abstract
The major components of the ir spectra of fluorapatite [Ca<sub>10</sub>(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>6</sub>F<sub>2</sub>] and hydroxyapatite [Ca<sub>10</sub>(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>6</sub>(OH)<sub>2</sub>] have been observed and analyzed by many investigators. In the present investigation, the polarized ir spectra of thin crystal sections of geological fluorapatite have been obtained in the region from 4000 to 1800 cm<sup>−1</sup>. On the basis of these spectra, the orientation of impurity hydroxyl ions trapped within the fluorapatite lattice has been suggested.
