Abstract
As part of a continuing study concerning the petrologic significance of selected rock forming minerals, approximately 50 alkali feldspars were obtained from co-workers and commercial establishments and were subjected to ir absorption analyses (wave-number range, 1200–300 cm−1). This was done soon after the author had completed a reconnaissance study on selected gneisses and granites of New England, in which an approximately equal number of alkali feldspars were analyzed in a similar manner. In that study, it was noted that systematic variations in the ir spectra did occur in the region beyond that studied by Laves and Hafner, specifically within the region 600–300 cm−1. (In addition, it has been pointed out to the author that albite has been investigated in the 635–85 cm−1 region.)
