An Infrared and Raman Study of Benzylidenemalononitriles

Abstract

Infrared and Raman spectra have been determined and the nitrile and olefinic C=C stretching bands assigned for 35 benzylidenemalononitriles. The effect of aromatic ring substitution on the position of the nitrile stretching band is discussed. Data are presented relating the nitrile stretching frequency to Hammett substituent constants for <i>meta-</i> and <i>para</i>-substituted benzylidenemalononitriles in chloroform solutions.
