Abstract

The present importance of plane gratings is due to a number of causes, the principal being the fact that perfect control of the groove profile is better attainable on a flat surface than on a concave one. It is also easier to incorporate plane gratings in a satisfactory optical setup, in particular in one possessing a high relative aperture (and hence luminosity) and no astigmatism.
