Raman spectroscopic studies of surface phenomena require special sample handling procedures. Among the parameters that must be considered in the designing of a cell for spectral studies of catalytic surface phenomena are: (1) facile sample alignment; (2) vacuum control; (3) temperature treatment capabilities to at least 600°C; (4) maximum optical transparency to minimize signal loss; and (5) sample rotation capabilities for those samples that are susceptible to decomposition upon continuous laser irradiation. It is noted that many, if not most, catalysts are susceptible to thermal degradation and therefore sample rotation is mandatory. A cell, herein described, that incorporates these parameters has been designed, constructed, and tested.
