Abstract
The development of a tunable diode laser system for the puff-by-puff determination of hydrogen cyanide is described. Both spectral line scanning and fixed-frequency monitoring techniques are utilized for quantitative measurements on mechanically diluted cigarettes. It is shown that such mechanical dilution leads to significantly greater reductions in hydrogen cyanide delivery than expected from static dilution measurements.
