A Simple Way to Rejuvenate Westinghouse EDLs

Abstract

One serious problem encountered with my use of a commercial EDL as a source for atomic absorption analysis is the sudden onset of very erratic fluctuations in lamp intensity for no apparent reason. This has occurred with both mercury and selenium lamps, but was especially severe with two examples of the latter. Replacement of these lamps is expensive because the rf cavity hardware as well as the actual quartz EDL bulb are sold as a unit. This "technique" describes a simple solution for these problems that costs very little and requires only simple apparatus to effect.
