Abstract
It was required to follow the hydrolysis of β-propiolactone (BPL), initially at concentration 100 ppm v/v (0.0016 M), in various aqueous buffers of ∼0.025 M. For this purpose a rapid method of assay reasonably accurate down to the 10 ppm level was required. In the classical investigation reaction was followed by conductivity titration in alkaline solutions, by dilatometric methods in acid solutions, and by both dilatometric and indicator-titration methods near neutrality. Conductivity titration allowed for initial lactone concentrations in the range 0.01 to 0.002 M, but for the other methods the lower limit was 0.03 M. In later work pH-stat titrations were described for the alkaline region, with initial concentrations in the range 0.002 to 0.004 M.
