Abstract

Spectroscopy in all its variations has probably been the most valuable of all experimental techniques in the development of physics and chemistry. Its history is a fascinating story which can be traced quite well through postage stamps. There are some gaps; for example, no country seems to have yet honored Fraunhofer, Bunsen, Rydberg, or Angstrom with a stamp. Nevertheless the coverage is surprisingly complete, and most aspects of the history can be illustrated in a colorful and interesting way.
