Abstract

A study has been made of the feasibility of using the <i>v</i>3 band of 13CO2 as a basis for measurement of the extent of isotope enrichment in breath tests. Correlation and least-squares treatments were used. Considering the constraints of a small computer, the correlation approach is the more satisfactory. The results indicate that a method that is based on a single measurement at 170 Torr, with a standard curve for quantitation, will, give results that are adequate, considering the natural variation that occurs. Assuming the use of a beam condenser, the amount of sample required is less than that normally taken for this application.
