Abstract

Metal oxide coatings are used on the surface of electronic components to improve heat dissipation through emission of infrared radiation. The physical properties of these films, e.g., composition and thickness, affect the spectral distribution of the emission. In addition, in the spectral region of the characteristic oxide vibrational modes, infrared emission is substantially reduced. In this paper, the infrared emissions for oxides on iron and Invar (36% Ni-Fe alloy) are compared. These metals are used in TV manufacture (shadow mask), and their oxide film properties are important to the operation of TV kinescopes.
