Abstract
A laminar flow torch for the support of a helium microwave plasma is described. The microwave-induced plasma (MIP) and associated spectrometer are used as an element-specific detector for gas chromatography. The development, optimization, and characterization of the torch and plasma are described with the use of carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine as model elements. Finally, the application of the MIP as a detector for gas chromatography is tested with a mixture of chlorinated and other solvents, where detector selectivity is demonstrated through observation of the carbon and chlorine atomic emission lines.
