Abstract
When studying small molecular ions in a gas discharge, one has to deal with the problem of neutral species that exist in much larger number. Frequently, the spectrum of the ion is completely hidden behind the spectrum of the neutral. In 1982 Gudeman and Saykally developed the technique of velocity modulation spectroscopy, a method that allows for an almost complete suppression of spectra originating from neutrals.
