Abstract

Cylindrical internal reflection (CIR) infrared spectroscopy was initially developed to serve as a means of achieving high-efficiency spectral sampling for liquids. Current CIR liquid sampling accessories for mid-infrared spectroscopy utilize sample compartment base-mounted designs for optimum performance. This is certainly the preferred design for the analytical laboratory since it optimizes energy throughput, but it is usually not feasible in a plant QC laboratory, where more than one sampling accessory must be used with the same spectrometer. A more appropriate design is one in which the accessory is mounted into the standard sample holder of the spectrometer. This arrangement allows the spectrometer to be used with different accessories, while maintaining a high degree of spectral reproducibility.
