An Accessory for Mid-Infrared Discriminant Analysis: Reflection Spectroscopy for Powdered Samples

Abstract

Mid-infrared raw material discriminant analysis in the quality control environment requires rapid, robust spectral sampling. In the QC laboratory this must usually be achieved with a single FT-IR spectrometer, so the preferred design is one that utilizes the existing spectrometer sample holder. The powder sampling accessories currently available require the use of a diffuse reflectance (DRIFTS) accessory or a liquid attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessory converted for powder sampling and usually require some sort of sample preparation. While this sampling approach is suitable in the analytical laboratory, it is less than ideal for QC analysis at a production facility.
