History of COL
Chinese Optics LettersM (COL), considered to be one of the most important journals in optics in China, has been published since January 2003. Before 2003, this journal is available as the Chinese Journal of Laser B, which is also a core journal in the fields of lasers and optics. The first issue of this journal appeared in 1982.
COL is published monthly by the Chinese Optics Letters Manuscript Office and is sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society, undertaken by the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is distributed by the Optical Society of America outside of the Chinese mainland.
COL is one of the leading Chinese journals for optics in China. The purpose of COL is to promote the generation, application, and archiving of knowledge in optics and to disseminate it worldwide. Its subject coverage includes Fiber Optics and Optical Communications, Lasers and Laser Optics, Nonlinear Optics, Image Processing, Instrumentation, Measurement and Metrology, Integrated Optics, Materials, Quantum Optics, and Ultrafast Optics.
COL has reported a large number of creative, important, and exciting results. Most of the papers published in COL are indexed by the main indexing systems of the world such as SCI-E, EI, and CA. COL is also the core source periodical of the Chinese Science Citation Database and the Chinese Academic Journal Comprehensive Evaluation Database.
Sponsor
The journal is sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society (COS) and undertaken by the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences.
COS was established in December 1979.
Chief Director of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd COS Councils:
Professor Daheng Wang (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences)
Chief Director of the 4th and 5th COS Councils:
Professor Guoguang Mu (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) COS sponsors seven journals:
Chinese Optics Letters, Acta Optica Sinica, Chinese Journal of Lasers, Journal of Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Acta Photonica Sinica, Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis, and Chinese Journal of Laser Medicine & Surgery.
SIOM was established in 1964. It is the earliest and the largest institute in China specializing in laser science and technology. It has developed into a comprehensive scientific research institute with modern optics as the leading orientation, with the exploring of significant fundamental science frontiers and the development of large engineering techniques and pioneering laser and optoelectronic applications as focal points, and with high-tech innovation and basic research for applications as the major task.
The main research fields are: High-Power Laser Techniques, Strong-Field Physics and High-Intensity Optics, Information Optics, Quantum Optics, Laser & Optoelectronic Devices, and Optical Materials.
There are three basic research laboratories: the Key Laboratory for High Intensity Optics of CAS, the Key Laboratory for Quantum Optics of CAS, and the Laboratory for Information Optics; three high-technology application and innovation research laboratories: the National Laboratory for High Power Laser Physics, the High Density Optical Storage Laboratory, and the Novel Laser Technique and Application System Laboratory; four R & D centers: the High Power Laser Unit Technique R & D Center, the Laser Application Engineering R & D Center, the Laser & Optoelectronic Functional Material R & D Center, and the Optical Coating Technology R & D Center; one Quality Management Center, and one Information Center. The staffs number nearly 1,000. Approximately 500 are researchers and technicians, including over 200 professors and senior engineers. Annually, SIOM has an enrollment of 250 graduate students.
As one of the initial institutes for the Pilot Project of Knowledge Innovation Program of CAS for meeting national strategic demands and international advanced research requirements, SIOM is devoted not only to basic research but also to high-technology applications and innovation research, which are strategic, basic, and foresighted.
SIOM undertakes the journals of Chinese Optics Letters, Acta Optica Sinica, Chinese Journal of Lasers, and Laser & Optoelectronics Progress.
