Abstract

This paper presents a simple technique that allows measurement of small variations in optical and acoustic properties of the fiber. Samples of two kinds of birefringent fiber are examined using this technique. The results are verified by using the samples in an acoustooptic notch-filter configuration. Good agreement is obtained between the measured filter characteristics and the ones predicted theoretically based on the measured axial variations.
