Abstract

A new polarization mode dispersion (PMD) estimation method by measuring local differential group delay using polarization optical time-domain reflectometry (POTDR) is proposed. This method has very high repeatability and is effective for low-PMD fibers, whereas conventional PMD measurement methods have large measurement uncertainty. This method is also applicable to the outer layers of on-spool fibers to estimate their off-spool PMD.
