Recent features upgrades include:

  • Sign up to receive alerts when an article is cited
  • Track abstract views and article downloads with Article-Level Metrics. The download statistics used by OSA follow the current COUNTER standard and use the previous month's data.
  • Create custom journals, email alerts, and more with a new user-friendly "My InfoBase" interface

Research Tools

Search and Navigation

  • Dynamic table of contents. The online journal table of contents can be sorted by topic or by page number. The table of contents can also be filtered to view articles for just one topic at a time. The Forthcoming page can be sorted by issue date or by publication date.
  • Cross-journal table of contents. Researchers can browse a consolidated thematic table of contents for all recent OSA journal articles.
  • Enhanced conference navigation. Researchers can browse through OSA Conference Papers by year and session name.
  • Faceted search results. Search results are organized by topical OCIS category and journal. Users can click on the organization criteria (the "facets") to filter their search results.
  • Breadcrumb navigation. All Optics InfoBase and online journal pages have breadcrumb navigation to orient readers and provide quick access to other locations of the site.
  • Author search. Researchers can quickly lookup all papers published by a particular author in the Optics InfoBase simply by clicking on an author name from the abstract page.
  • Simple search, fielded search, quick lookup. A new search interface appears on every online journal page for quick access to simple, advanced, and other types of searches. Searches may be run for specific titles, across titles, and even external titles to the Optics InfoBase. If you need help, read our Search Tips.

Exporting and Saving Citations

OSA now offers reference export to popular reference management software formats. Items selected from a table of contents page, abstract page, or search results in InfoBase or in an OSA online journal can be exported to BibTeX (see OSA guidelines for submitting LaTeX), RIS (see our templates page for EndNote style), Rich Text, or Plain Text format. The "My Article Collections" feature is also available for Optics InfoBase users with My InfoBase accounts.

Revealing Usage and Related Content

  • Article-Level Metrics. OSA now allows researchers to track abstract views and article downloads. To see the metrics, visit the abstract page of any OSA journal and click the Metrics tab. Note that OSA follows the COUNTER standard for tracking downloads, and data represent the previous month's activity. Articles without a Metrics tab do not yet have data available. Download statistics are shown for cumulative downloads since January 2010 and/or for a rolling, 18-month period.
  • Top-downloaded articles. Our InfoBase reader survey shows that people value information about how others are using OSA journal content. Most popular is lists of top-downloaded articles, which we now display on each online journal page for the previous month.
  • Forward reference linking. OSA has added external forward citation links to show which articles across publishers cite the article being viewed. Forward citation linking is available for all OSA journals going back to 1917.
  • Related journal and proceedings articles. Now each abstract page displays related OSA content arranged by source journal as well as by topic.
  • Social bookmarking, E-mail a colleague. Web 2.0 has been called the social web because it is characterized by tools that allow readers to add, annotate, and share content. The Optics InfoBase now has convenient ways for readers to export article records to popular social bookmarking websites; many of these websites have tools for discussion, rating, and similar tasks. We also provide a new "e-mail to a colleague" feature.


OSA partners with CrossRef to provide reference linking across multiple publishers. CrossRef uses a Digital Object Identifier (or DOI) system to link citations across publishers. Each DOI is associated with a set of basic metadata and a URL pointer to the full text, so that it uniquely identifies the content item and provides a persistent link to its location on the internet.
