S-JET: efficient reservation scheduling algorithm for optical burst switches

Abstract

There have been two major algorithmic philosophies for finding the best way to reserve and schedule a burst in optical burst switching (OBS). One such method, called Horizon, proposes to assign the reservation at the end of the reservation list, at the earliest convenience. Another method, called JET (just enough time) consists in exploring the reservation list for the scheduled arrival time of the burst. The reservation is made in the free period that guarantees the minimum waste of time. This method has the advantage of making more efficient use of the available time but may have large processing delays. Horizon is not as efficient in terms of time allocation but has the advantage of great simplicity that reduces the processing time. This is particularly important, given that recent studies show that processing time can have a major effect on the performance of burst switching, thus suggesting that JET could be set aside and that Horizon could be used instead. We propose an efficient method that we call S-JET (slotted JET) that has the efficiency of JET and the improved processing time of Horizon. We discuss the major idea behind S-JET, its implementation details, and experimental results comparing S-JET and Horizon.
