The refractive indices of 13 optical glasses are reported for the wavelength range from about 0.43 to 4.25 μ. Transmittance data for three thicknesses of the same glasses are given for the wavelength range from about 1.0 to 5.0 μ along with the calculated absorption coefficients.

The numerical designations of the standard types of optical glasses are in accordance with those suggested by A.S.T.M. ["Standard definitions of terms relating to glass and glass products," A.S.T.M. Designation C162–52, 1955 Book of ASTM Standards (American Society of Testing Materials, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Part 3, pp. 948–962.] They are explained as follows, taking F573/425 as an example: F means flint, 573 indicates that the refractive index ND, is 1.573, and 425 indicates a Nu value, of 42.5.
The letter symbols for the various types of optical glass are LC, light crown, CF, crown flint, BaF, barium flint, and BaC, barium crown. The number designations are the same as those used in Table I.
