Optical Constants of a Clean Mercury Surface as a Function of Temperature

Abstract

The optical constants of Hg have been measured as a function of temperature (23°–115°C) on a surface that was demonstrated to be atomically clean (fraction of contamination monolayer ~0.004). The measurements were made at an angle of incidence of 70° and a wavelength of 5461 Å, in He atmosphere and in a vacuum. The equations relating n and κ with temperature are n=[0.00036T+1.593]±0.004, κ=[−0.00165T+2.995]±0.012, where T is °C (range 23°–115°) and the optical constants are defined by N=n(1−).
