Abstract

Recent measurements of the Zeeman effect in Er I have resulted in a consistent set of Zeeman data, in excellent agreement with theory for the 4<i>f</i><sup>12</sup>6<i>s</i><sup>2</sup> and 4<i>f</i><sup>11</sup>5<i>d</i>6<i>s</i><sup>2</sup> electron configurations of Er I. The measured value of <i>g</i> = 1.166±0.003 for the <sup>3</sup>H<sub>6</sub> level of the 4<i>f</i><sup>12</sup>6<i>s</i><sup>2</sup> electron configuration reduces the possibility of that value differing from the theoretically predicted value or the value measured by atomic-beam methods.
