Detection of atmospheric turbulent layers by spatiotemporal and spatioangular correlation measurements of stellar-light scintillation

Abstract

Correlation measurements of the scintillation of single and double stars are described and interpreted in terms of discrete turbulent layers. For each observed layer, an approximate altitude is determined and the index and temperature structure constants integrated over the layer thickness are estimated. Results are in good agreement with in situ measurements performed elsewhere.
