  1. The simplification resulting from the use of contrast instead of luminance was first called to the author's attention by Dr. S. Q. Duntley.
  2. It should be noted that the image formed on the retina when the telescope is used is not the same as the image that would be formed if the unaided eye were at 1/M the distance from the target. The amount of intervening atmosphere being less at the reduced distance, it is misleading to regard a terrestrial telescope as a device "for bringing objects closer to the observer."
