The Analysis of Toluene for Benzene by an Ultraviolet Absorption of Vapor Mixtures and the Determination of Concentration of Toluene in Air by Use of the Rayleigh-Jeans Interference Refractometer

Abstract

A quantitative spectrographic method for the analysis of toluene for benzene is described, which is useful in the range of concentrations of benzene from 0.01 to 10 percent. The method is both convenient and highly specific. The use of the Rayleigh-Jeans interference refractometer in the control of concentration of toluene vapor in an exposure chamber suitable for toxicological investigations is described. The method employed is both rapid and accurate. At low concentrations, with the bubbler used, the control is within 5 percent of the amount present; at higher concentrations the control is within 10 percent.
