  1. A. J. Allen and R. G. Franklin, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 29, 1 (1939).
  2. These are porcelain to glass to Kovar insulators obtained from the Stupakoff Laboratories, Inc., 6627 Hamilton Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Kovar ends are soft soldered to the brass cap and to the filament lead to form a vacuum-tight insulating seal.
  3. Easy-Flo solder obtainable from the Air Reduction Company is excellent for this purpose.
  4. The curves were supplied through the courtesy of Professor L. A. DuBridge and Mr. Le Roy Apker of the University of Rochester.
