General expressions for the transmissivity and reflectivity of multi-layer coatings of any number of components, for light polarized in any way and incident at any angle, are derived.

Remark on notation: the light is taken as incident from medium p and not, as might be expected, from medium O, because, as will be seen later, the solution is obtained by successive substitutions beginning with terms containing the subscript appropriate to the medium into which the transmitted wave emerges; thus another film can be added by making one more substitution at the end of the calculation, which is done by simply changing p into p+1 in the general formula.
