Non-Adaptability of the ICI System to Some Near-Whites Which Show Absorption in the Far Blue Region of the Spectrum

Abstract

Attempts to correlate readily recognizable chromatic differences between two near-white paints, which contain the widely used rutile and anatase titanium dioxide pigments, with colorimetric data calculated from spectrophotometric curves, by the accepted procedure, have been unsuccessful. The curves for these materials are essentially identical from 430 to 700 mu but differ in selective absorption from 430 mu and below. Readings with the Hunter multipurpose reflectometer for these two paints are identical. The evidence shows that the GE recording spectrophotometer is capable of measurement of the spectral differences, but the ICI system does not correctly weight the blue region of the spectrum in accord with visual perception.
