  2. An interesting situation arises if the two slits of width w are made contiguous, forming an aggregate slit of width 2w. The effect of the two oppositely-oriented prisms can easily be shown to be such that, compared to a single monochromator using one of the identical prisms and having a slit width w, the bandwidth is the same and the quantity of radiation transmitted is doubled. This gain disappears if the prisms are given like orientation. In the General Electric Company commercial spectrophotometer, the two prisms are virtually oppositely oriented.
