The Measurement of the Luminescence of Fluoroscopic X-Ray Screens

Abstract

The selection of a superior fluoroscopic screen for direct x-ray observation and diagnosis requires the measurement of the visual effectiveness of the shadows of objects on the screen. At clinical levels of excitation ZnS-CdS fluoroscopic screens are excited to brightnesses near the condition of cone to rod transition. At these levels the color and thickness of the screen becomes critical. A series of screens of various colors and thicknesses was examined, and the optimal color and thickness was determined with the aid of an apparatus permitting psychometric technics. The selected screen provides cone stimulus in nearly all clinical situations.
