Brightnesses of Fine Detail in Air Photography

Abstract

An airborne recording telephotometer with a field of view of three-minute diameter has been used in an extensive series of measurements of ground brightnesses as seen from an aircraft. Results are presented for a number of typical scenes. On brightness, these results confirm previous range values and show that, by reason of their frequencies, central values are more important than extreme values. On brightness differences, these results indicate that for small detail a typical difference of log brightness is 0.08. This is lower than previously believed.
