Abstract

A versatile, precision lens testing bench is described. The construction is of such accuracy that all measured defects of imagery are due solely to the objective lens under test. The bench was designed as a result of cooperation between the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories and the Laboratories of David W. Mann, Lincoln, Massachusetts, where the bench was constructed. The bench is of the nodal slide type and is provided with flat field bars. It accommodates lenses of all focal lengths up to 1220 mm and diameters from 0.5 inch to 7 inches. It includes provisions for centering and revolving the lens under test, and the microscope is capable of being moved in three mutually perpendicular planes through calibrated micrometer screws. The microscope is capable of rotation about its object point through an angle of 100° to permit testing of telephoto lenses and lenses having extreme distortion. A procedure for adjusting the bench is discussed. Additions and alterations made are described.
