Inhomogeneity of Thallium Halide Mixed Crystals and Its Elimination

Abstract

Prisms, cut from mixed crystals of thallium halides, as they are used at present for infrared spectroscopy, show optical inhomogeneity which causes an undesirable decrease of resolution. By chemical, x-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis it was possible to trace the cause of this defect to the use of incorrect data of the minimum melting points of the compositions from which the crystals were grown. The melting points of the thallium halides and of their binary systems have been redetermined, and crystals grown from compositions corresponding to the accurate minimum melting points have been found to be entirely homogeneous.
