Abstract
Third-order theory is used to derive an expression for the tolerance on the percent correction of a paraboloidal mirror from the Rayleigh limit of residual spherical aberration. This tolerance is found to depend upon the focal length of the mirror and the radius of the zone being tested. The variation of the tolerance for different zones of the mirror is shown graphically by applying the tolerance to the Foucault test of an F/6 paraboloid of focal length 48 inches. A method is given for determining the maximum aperture permitted if a spherical surface is to be substituted for a paraboloidal one.
