Precision Concentration Analysis of D2O/H2O by Means of Phase Contrast Refractometry

Abstract

By means of a phase contrast refractometer, a new tool with a precision in optical path determination of the order of λ/1000, the refractivity function of the mixture heavy-light water has been determined, and is, for 5461A light, at 22.75°C, and within the mole fraction x<0.04 so far examined, − Δn(x)×104 =47.55x+5.8x2. It is possible to use this optical method for analysis and control of the contents of D2O to within about 0.002 mole percent at all concentrations.
