Effect of Certain Features of Photo-Optical Transmission Systems on Characteristics Related to Picture Quality in Projected Motion Pictures

Abstract

In an effort to provide an objective guide for the evaluation of different wide-screen photographic projection systems, the Motion Picture Research Council has employed methods suggested by Schade to determine the relative ability of different systems to transmit characteristics related to definition and graininess, and has analyzed the relationship between depth of field and projected picture size with an idealized camera obscura.

The results have shown Schade’s method to be qualitatively in agreement with observational tests, and indicate a better method for rating film than the limiting resolving power which has been used heretofore. Depth of field analyses have shown that in order to retain quality in large screen picture projection the illuminance on the scene in front of the camera must be at least proportional to the fourth power of the linear picture dimension.
