Abstract
The infrared spectrum of Mg(OH)2 single crystals reported by Mara and Sutherland is discussed in detail from the point of view of considering the effect of a small twofold crystalline field on the rotational levels of the OH− molecule ion. The spectrum may be reasonably accounted for by a ~350 cm−1 barrier, with respect to the position, polarization, and temperature dependence of its many lines.
