Radiation Received by an Uncollimated Receiver from a 4π Source

Abstract

The relative amounts of scattered visible radiation received from a 4π source by an uncollimated receiver, when both source and receiver are immersed in a uniform atmosphere, are computed as a function of receiver acceptance angle for a range of receiver acceptance angles from 0° to 180°, and for types of atmospheric scattering which are characteristic of an extremely clear atmosphere, a hazy atmosphere, and a murky atmosphere. The ranges of optical thickness (path length times attenuation coefficient) for which calculations are made with these types of scattering are 0.033 to 1.2, 0.1 to 3.6, and 0.3 to 10.8, respectively. The atmosphere is assumed to be infinite in extent, and only single scattering is taken into account. For the case of a hazy atmosphere, the actual ratio of the amounts of direct and scattered-in radiation received is also computed for the given ranges of optical thickness and acceptance angle, and is compared with experimental results published by other investigators and preliminary experimental results obtained by the writer.
