Multiple Diffraction of Light by Ultrasonic Vibrations in Transparent Solids

Abstract
Ultrasonic waves in transparent solids are used to produce multiple light diffraction patterns. It is shown that the form of the patterns depends on the vibrational resonance conditions of the samples. The influence of longitudinal and shear elastic waves on the production of secondary and tertiary diffraction patterns is discussed. The presence of a visible secondary shear diffraction order is demonstrated in sapphire.
