Abstract
The speed of a grazing-incidence type concave grating spectrograph in the extreme ultraviolet can be increased appreciably by the use of a suitable toroidal focussing mirror placed before the slit so as to receive the light from the source at grazing-incidence. The radii of the toroidal mirror are chosen so that its first (horizontal) astigmatic image falls on the slit and its second (vertical) astigmatic image falls beyond the grating. Increased aperture and reduced astigmatism for the spectrograph as a whole are thus achieved. The elementary theory is developed and sample spectrograms presented.
