Abstract
The history of the transmission-type pile-of-plates polarizer has been dominated by two equations which make different assumptions as to the fate of the unwanted, multiply-reflected rays. Both equations assume that the polarizer consists of parallel-sided plates mounted parallel to one another and inserted in the beam at Brewster’s angle. The present article shows that better results are obtained if the plates are slightly wedge-shaped, are mounted in “fanned” manner, and are mounted at an angle slightly exceeding Brewster’s angle. A performance better than that implied by either equation is achievable.
