Diffraction Images of Circular Objects in High-Resolution Microscopy

Abstract

Experiments are described in which the time-averaged irradiance profiles of the images of circular holes in an opaque aluminum film and opaque disks of silver, having diameters in the range 0.1 to 3 μ, were measured using light of wavelength λ=5300 Å and an objective numerical aperture of 1.28. Examples showing the influence of condenser aperture upon the images are given, together with further results for the images of the full range of objects under full-cone illumination. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of scalar theory.
